Course Description


In this course, child psychologist Dr. Samuel Maddox and school psychologist Calvin Smith Jr., EdS, discuss multi-dimensional forms of oppression that exist within educational systems and its impact on academic achievement for African American children.

  1. Describe an intersectional perspective of how race, class, and gender oppression impact African American children in public and private schools.
  2. Identify educational policies that adversely impact educational achievement for African American children.

Samuel Maddox, PhD


Dr. Maddox earned his Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Morehouse College and went on to earn his Doctorate in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Through internship at the Marcus Autism Center, post-doctoral training at Emory University School of Medicine and private practice at Floortime™ Atlanta and currently A Healing Paradigm, Dr. Maddox has extensive experience working with families of children with a variety of medical, developmental, behavioral, emotional and academic challenges.

Calvin Smith Jr., EdS.


Calvin R. Smith Jr. completed his undergraduate studies at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, with a minor in Mathematical Sciences. After teaching secondary mathematics in Miami, Calvin went on to pursue both a Master’s and Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology from Florida State University. Calvin uses his skills as a certified School Psychologist and former teacher to improve family-school collaboration, assessment, and therapeutic interventions with teens and college age students. Calvin is completing a doctorate in educational psychology at Georgia State University.

Ifetayo Ojelade, PhD


Dr. Ifetayo Ojelade is a Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) with an interest in assisting people to heal in order to take their careers and personal lives to the next level. As an expert in trauma recovery, Dr. Ojelade works with healthcare, legal, and safety professionals to manage secondary trauma in the workplace. She also has a particular interest in women leaders of color in high stress roles.
